Closing arguments in Uresti trial delayed until Tuesday

On Friday, many were preparing for closing arguments in the fraud trial of State Senator Carlos Uresti. But the judge put it off.

Friday was a major letdown for many at the fraud trial of State Senator Carlos Uresti as Judge David Ezra decided to move closing arguments, which were scheduled for Friday morning, to next Tuesday.

Monday is a federal holiday, Presidents Day.

The courtroom was full, with friends and family of both parties, and the public anticipating the closing arguments. But Judge Ezra addressed everyone and said that he was given additional information by the attorneys that could have resulted in changes to the jury’s instructions.

There were already over 70 pages of jury instructions, and reading them to the jury was expected to take about an hour and a half.

The defense asked the judge if closing arguments can be moved to next week since they did not believe it would be a good idea to split the arguments into multiple days, especially considering the long Presidents Day weekend.

The judge says that he believes that moving the closing arguments to next Tuesday would be the fair thing to do.
