Boerne Police Department addresses school safety in Facebook letter

Boerne Chief of Police Jim Kohler wrote about the need for continued community vigilance to protect children in Boerne schools in a media release shared on Facebook Thursday.

Since last week’s mass shooting in Parkland, Florida, one of the topics dominating the national conversation has been how to protect children in schools. In response to concerns from parents of children in the City of Boerne Schools, Boerne PD Chief Jim Kohler wrote the following:

The Boerne Police Department has our children as their number one priority and works closely with all our schools to make their learning environment as safe as possible. As most of you are probably aware, we have school resource officers at each of the high schools and middle schools and these officers are full-fledged Boerne Police Officers who report directly to my Assistant Chief of Police. I also have all my patrol officers make multiple security checks of all the schools throughout each and every school day with starting and ending times of the school day receiving extra vigilance by us. Furthermore, the school district and the police department have a great working relationship and discuss issues on a daily basis while also jointly conducting exercises regarding school emergencies. While no one can guarantee anyone’s safety 100% of the time I felt it necessary to let you know we stand committed to being vigilant when it comes to our citizens and especially our children.

In closing, we need the community to also stay vigilant by reporting anything you see or hear to the police department. Thank you for your continued support.
