Made in S.A. On The Road: Rockport company puts Harvey waste to good use

A Rockport couple is using their company, which restores old sails, to help in the Hurricane Harvey recovery.

Trash piles litter this stretch of Highway 35 as you head into Rockport, invoking memories of the damage Harvey caused to this small coastal town.

"We were just devastated. As we were driving in, I told Gwyn, I said we might not have a house." Sail Again, co-owner, Robert Schroeder said.

Schroeder and his wife Gwyn are among the lucky ones.

The storm spared their home.

"Gwyn and I got to see the Coast Guard pulling sunken boats out of the water," Robert Schroeder said.

"For a lot of people, they haven't even been able to get down to their boats and clean them out. That will come in the spring,” Sail Again, co-owner, Gwyneth Schroeder said.

Figuring out that their business, Sail Again, could help with some the debris left behind.

"What we tell somebody is right before you take them to the dumpster call us and we'll be your dumpster. Because what we do is we cut them up into different pieces," Robert Schroeder said.

The storm brought a wave of supplies to them.

Those pieces of old and destructed sails cleaned-up and sewn into different size nautical bags.

“Whenever we get in need of a sail, they come,” Gwyneth Schroeder said. Each sail comes with its own weathered story.

"The sails may have been God knows where. They may have been every place," Robert Schroeder said.

"But, we know they are coming from Harvey," Gwyneth Schroeder said.

The couple is now in their fifteenth year of business and combining their love for sailing and recycling.

"That's what's been exciting for us at Sail Again. It's something we are reusing, so here you go. We picked it up out of the trash, and here we go. And now it's something nice.”

Schroeder was confident when asked if their company would actually "sail again".

“It'll sail again. That's how we got our name," he said.
