SAPD: Wrong-way accident claims life of one early Sunday morning

At about 2:36 a.m. on IH-35 South around Pine Street, police say a wrong-way driver hit another vehicle head on.

SAN ANTONIO — A highway was shut down early Sunday morning after a car accident killed one person, police say.

At about 2:36 a.m. on IH-35 South around Pine Street, a wrong-way driver hit another vehicle head on, according to authorities on scene. One person was taken to the hospital immediately in critical condition. That person is now in stable condition.

Authorities were visibly cutting open the vehicle to save the second person, who was in critical condition. Once out of the vehicle, fire and EMS attempted life saving measures, but police say the victim died at the scene.

It was later confirmed that the person who died was the wrong-way driver. Police were unable to identify the driver.

IH-35 South was shut down while crews worked the scene.

Inez Beltran was driving to work when he witnessed the crash.

"I was on the other side of the highway, I was parallel to the vehicle in a way so just seeing that you can't help but do anything but pray and just hope everybody makes it out," Beltran said.

He said it was tough to see photos of the crash later that day and learning that someone died.

"I feel bad for both parties," said Beltran. "I mean it didn't have to be this way, I mean we all have to take responsibilities for what we do."

No other injuries were reported, and the investigation is ongoing.
