Man killed after crashing his car into fence on north side

The victim was found underneath his car in critical condition, but he died at the scene.

SAN ANTONIO — A man was killed after he crashed his car into a fence on the north side of town early Sunday morning.

San Antonio Police officers responded to the 800 block of Briarcliff Drive near Blanco Road around 2:28 a.m. for reports of a single-car accident.

When police arrived, they found a driver had lost control and crashed into a fence. The car caught fire immediately following.

KENS 5 spoke with a neighbor who says she heard everything.

Lauren Vaquera lives next door. She says she was filled with adrenaline after abruptly waking up by the sound of a crash and a lot of yelling outside her window.

"I was actually asleep on the couch," she said. "I remember I was asleep and woke up to a really loud noise."

Vaquera recounts what happened when the crash that destroyed a neighbor's fence caused that rude awakening.

"My dog was barking and I remember hearing yelling. And I just thought it was just a two person crash, like a two person crash and that they got angry."

When crews arrived at the scene, initially they believed nobody was in the vehicle. While working to extinguish the flames, they saw the victim had been pinned underneath his vehicle. They performed life-saving measures, but unfortunately, he died at the scene.

"A little bit remorseful, I feel like maybe if we had checked it out, maybe we could have done something... I don't know if anything would have changed. But I do hope so."

Vaquera says crashes on this busy road happen a lot.

"It happened to my grandma, she crashed here too," she said. "So the light especially, the light is always really busy."

Investigators are not sure what caused the man to crash. The victim's identity was not provided.

This is a developing story.
