Albert Monrroy is a photojournalist for KENS 5 in San Antonio, Texas. He joined the crew in October 2022.
He was born in Houston, but Albert’s family later moved back home to the Rio Grande Valley. He was raised in Brownsville and considers himself a Valley native.
From an early age, Albert had an interest in the magic of television. As a kid, he wanted to be a meteorologist for local ABC affiliate KRGV, but once he learned there was math involved, he opted to learn photography and editing instead.
He attended the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, where he learned all about journalism through the UTRGV Student Media department. Once he graduated in 2019, he landed his first big job at the very same station he grew up watching as a kid, KRGV.
Four months after he took the job, COVID-19 took over. It was a difficult transition to make from working with others to working apart. Albert covered the Rio Grande Valley as it experienced a surge in COVID cases, a surge in migrants and immigration issues on the border, and the February 2021 freeze that left the area, as well as most of the state, in a power crisis.
Now four hours away from home, Albert is ready to take on the city of San Antonio.
When he’s not out and about in the city, you can bet Albert’s in bed scrolling through TikTok, watching YouTube, or listening to some Charley Crockett.
