Axel Divino is a visual storyteller journalist for KENS 5 in San Antonio, Texas. He joined the KENS 5 team in September 2021.
Axel is a Texas native hailing from the city of Mission, Texas, not too far from San Antonio.
One morning, someone asked Axel if he wanted to anchor the morning news for his high school. That’s where he discovered his love of public speaking and being in front of a camera.
He started off college majoring in theater to become an actor, but he later graduated from the University of Texas – Rio Grande Valley with a bachelor's degree in broadcast journalism.
Before coming to KENS 5, Axel got his start as a professional journalist at KRGV-TV Channel 5 in the Rio Grande Valley, starting as a studio camera operator for a few months before getting the opportunity to become a photojournalist.
From then on, Axel covered local news in the RGV, ranging from town-wrecking floods and hurricanes to crisis border stories.
After two years at KRGV, Axel ventured off to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to be a photojournalist for KOAT. Working in the Land of Enchantment was a great experience for him. Coverage of the entire state of New Mexico proved to be tough.
He once even flew 14,500 feet in the air in a helicopter to cover a massive wildfire. After one year, Axel decided it was time to leave the green chile, amazing weather and breakfast burritos to come back to his humid home of Texas.
While not at work, Axel can be found taking part in the numerous hobbies he enjoys. You can find him at the basketball court shooting bricks, convincing his wallet why he needs another pair of sneakers to add to his collection, arguing with kids on Call of Duty, eating tacos, or watching films convincing himself he can still be the next Jamie Foxx or the first Filipino Denzel Washington.
San Antonio was the closest big city when Axel was growing up, and it was always a dream to be able to live in the city where he would vacation very often. Being able to do what he loves to do in San Antonio means a lot to him.
Axel is always taking new suggestions for places to eat in the San Antonio area! If you see him around, say hello! Also, Go Spurs Go!
