Gregory Matthews is the director of digital media for KENS 5 in San Antonio, Texas. In his role, he oversees all of the station's digital platforms, including the desktop website, the mobile website and app, the 24/7 OTT streaming app and all social media channels. He is responsible for editorial content and web/mobile infrastructure. He's also in charge of innovating digital projects and managing the KENS 5 digital staff.
Greg is a key project manager within the KENS 5 newsroom. He led the local site integration for the last six redesigns of KENS5.com and has managed the KENS 5 app's local builds since its inception. He has headed up KENS5.com's high school football digital coverage for the past 15 seasons and also serves as the database leader for KENS 5's on-air and online election coverage.
During Greg's time at the station, KENS5.com has been recognized with two Edward R. Murrow regional awards and three Texas Associated Press Broadcasters awards, all for best website. Greg has received two Lone Star Emmys for excellence in interactive journalism.
Greg is a copy editor at heart and has edited award-winning story packages for KENS5.com, including the "JFK in SA" and "Heroes" series. He has presented three times at the American Copy Editors Society (ACES) national conference.
He began his career as front-page designer and copy editor for the Journal News in Westchester County, N.Y., and then for the Des Moines Register. In 1999, he left his newspaper role behind to become a pioneer in the new world of online journalism, first as online editor with the Copley Chicago publishing group (later part of the Sun-Times), and then with the Springfield (Mo.) News-Leader.
Greg was part of the original team that launched KENS5.com in January 2009. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism with a degree in news-editorial design. He and his wife live in San Antonio and have three children.
