Boerne High School band wins $15,000 in band equipment in Metallica's 'For Whom the Band Tolls' contest

They tied with a high school from New York for medium-sized high school in the contest that challenged bands to incorporate Metallica music into a performance.

SAN ANTONIO — The Boerne High School band has won $15,000 in band equipment from the heavy metal band Metallica, in a contest challenging college and high school bands to incorporate their music into a performance.

Metallica said, "the response blew us away and made for a heated competition, and the results are in!"

Robert Trujillo, bass player for the band, announced the winners on the band's Facebook page Sunday.

The winners include:

  • College (Division 1): Auburn University
  • College (Divisions 2 & 3): Eastern New Mexico University
  • High School (Large): Dobyns-Bennett High School (Kingsport, TN)
  • High School (Medium): TIE - Boerne High School (Boerne, TX) & Malverne High School (Malverne, NY)
  • High School (Small): Oakton High School (Vienna, VA)

"Marching bands at high school and collegiate levels cranked their repertoires up to 11 to compete for nearly $200,000 in equipment by creating the most exciting, unique, and impressive performances incorporating our music," said Metallica.

Boerne's Mighty Greyhound Band performed a four-minute medley of songs including, “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” “Enter Sandman,” “Fade to Black,” “Seek and Destroy,” and “Master of Puppets.”

Metallica thanked everyone who brought their music to their marching band programs, and congratulated all the winners.

The winners in each category will take home instruments and equipment thanks to Metallica's sponsors Tama - Bergerault USA, KHS America, Zildjian Company, D'Addario and Co., EVANS Drumheads, ProMark, and Gator Cases, in partnership with Sweetwater, Conn Selmer, and Hal Leonard.
