Latina-owned and operated café infusing culture into coffee and food | Neighborhood Eats

Pair ice cream bunuelos with coffee inspired by the Mexican family matriarch, the abuelita.

SAN ANTONIO — More coffee, please?

That’s what one café in San Antonio will have you asking over and over again. The local spot is taking an ol’ morning classic and infusing Mexican flavor into it.

This week, Neighborhood Eats is checking out Mas Café.

“I took a class in Seattle to become a barista, and I fell in love with the hospitality side of it, and we just started brainstorming and it came to fruition," said Stephany Cardenas-Massey.

Since then, Cardenas-Massey has grown her business into two locations on the northwest side of San Antonio. Latina owned and operated, her staff of baristas is mostly female.

“In the coffee industry, it is dominated by men and I wanted to bring something that was fun, exciting and colorful,” she said. “Also [I want to] empower women and Latinas and show that we can actually do it.”

Abuelita Latte

Her menu consists of savory sandwiches and sweet treats but the star is coffee. To start, we took a trip down the Around Mas flight. It’s a flight featuring four different coffees: Affogato, Abuelita Latte, Pina Colada flavored Cold Brew and Cold Brew with Tres Leches Foam.

“It is our most sold and staple item at Mas," Cardenas-Massey said. "It is our cold brew with our tres leches cold brew foam, which we make in house.”

Our reporter also recommends the affogato, which is served with ice cream!

Golden Bite Bagel Sandwich

To eat, Mas Cafe has a Italian inspired sandwich called the Golden Bite. It has fresh Italian salami, tapenade, cream cheese and pepperoncini.

"This was inspired by one of our former management team members. She went on a trip to Colorado and could not stop talking about this bagel and told her let's go ahead and do it. We tested it out and made a few changes and it's been a staple here."

For a sweet treat, our reporter recommends the bunuelos with ice cream. It's topped with dulce de leche and powdered sugar.

Mas Café has two locations in San Antonio:

  • 10738 Braun Road
  • 12540 Bandera Road
