SAN ANTONIO — Laurel Café is the newest hotspot for brunch or dinner on the far north side of San Antonio.
Co-owners Diego Rodriguez and Sergio Remolina wanted to bring something different to the area and decided to open a brunch-style restaurant with a slight twist.
“Brunch is like my favorite food of the day, so we decided to go from there and create this concept. Most of this concept comes from this love for food, eating well, and having a place that is nice to sit,” Rodriguez said.
Rodriguez grew up in Mexico City surrounded by a loving family that sold carnitas and created tasty dishes, thus igniting his love for food and cooking.
He attended culinary school in Mexico and took some classes in Barcelona, Spain before moving to San Antonio eight years ago where he fell in love with the rich culture and friendly people.
“For me it was really important to create a place where you can bring family and also you can have good food,” Rodriguez said.
Many of the dishes served at Laurel Café are staple brunch items that have been slightly elevated to fit the restaurants welcoming vibe and nature-inspired aesthetic.
When asked to describe the menu options Rodriguez said, “A lot of people tell us ‘It’s not Mexican but it’s not Texan, but it’s like just good."
One of their most popular dishes and Rodriguez’s personal favorite is the Breakfast Bowl packed with eggs, bacon, potatoes, beans and green salsa verde.
Rodriguez recommends that customers mix the food together and then scoop it up with bread.
Another fan favorite is their EPB plate which comes with eggs, bacon and fluffy buttermilk pancakes. You also can’t go wrong with their highly recommended burgers, fresh salads, and filling sandwiches.
“I promise that whenever you visit me, you’re going to eat good. Like I love cooking. I’m a fat kid. I love eating. I love good food, and I love spending my money on good food,” Rodriguez said.
After you’ve stuffed your face with a delicious lunch or entre plate, you can finish it off with a homemade pastry like the twice-baked almond croissant, apple strudel, or red velvet cookies.
“When you see people grabbing a pastry and they bite into it and they just like smile or just laugh, it’s something so surreal. Like how you can make people feel or change a feeling just with a bite of something,” Rodriguez said.
But, no matter what you order, when you stop by Laurel Café, you’re guaranteed to leave smiling.
“It’s really important that when people leave, they’re happy, they [feel] accomplished with their experience,” Rodriguez said.
Laurel Café is located at 24851 Canyon Golf Rd., San Antonio TX. 78260 overlooking the green fields.
