Decadent cakes, creamy pasta and rich history at hill county restaurant | Neighborhood Eats

Rails is a fully restored historic 1915 Kerrville train depot!

SAN ANTONIO — KENS 5 went to Kerrville to visit a restaurant with an interesting backstory. It’s called Rails, owned by Melissa Southern and her husband.

“You know, they always say, start with dessert,” Southern exclaimed.

All aboard! And fasten your taste buds for a variety of tastes, from salads to pasta and delicious desserts at this hill country restaurant.

“Last May was our 20th year,” Southern said.  “We’re also really lucky that we are around some other buildings that we’ve little by little renovated and used as a different type of business.”

Renovations include a bakery – The Sweeter Side of Rails, a bed and breakfast and an old lumberyard which has been turned into an events hall.

“Sometimes we’ll have people from Europe in here, and then we’ll have people in San Antonio,” she said.

It’s the small-town feel but international flavor that keeps customers coming back for more, like the farmers market salad, and creamy penne pasta dish with asparagus and roasted bell peppers.

Most importantly the salted caramel espresso and pina colada cakes are a must-try!

When you head out for your next trip – mosey down to Rails in Kerrville.
