La Villita's inaugural Oktoberfest event brings German heritage to San Antonio

Organizers say they created this weekend-long celebration for everyone in San Antonio to try and experience something different.

SAN ANTONIO — Oktoberfest at La Villita is in full swing in Downtown San Antonio!

The inaugural event is a three-day celebration with events for everyone to enjoy.

Food, beer and fun are just three aspects of what makes Oktoberfest. Organizers say they created this weekend-long celebration for everyone in San Antonio to try and experience something different.

"So there's lots of different cultures in San Antonio and the people that enjoy different beer-type festivals. And obviously the German part is, is a good one," said Aaron Selinkoff, Mad Dogs Restaurant Group Director of Operations.

Selinkoff helped make the idea of Oktoberfest a reality. Selinkoff says La Villita was chosen for its ties to German history.

"We actually have a space here in the corner called the Little Round House," Selinkoff said. "And it was an area of San Antonio that was very German-forward. It was built in the 1850s by some German settlers."

Beyond a good pretzel and cold beer, Selinkoff says Oktoberfest is a family-friendly event free to experience.

"There's all kinds of competitions, like the stein hoisting competition," Selinkoff said. "There's dance, you know, cloggers and dance groups that are performing. There's parades, and there's great times to be had."

If you can't make it out today, the party is still going on Sunday at La Villita.
