SAN ANTONIO — The songs of Vicente Fernández, the legendary regional Mexican singer who died in 2021, will once again fill arenas next year, courtesy of his son.

Alejandro Fernández, himself a Grammy winner who has carved his own path through traditional Mexican genres and later pop, is coming to San Antonio in May as part of his 26-city "De Rey a Rey" Tour. Its name translating to "From King to King," the tour is being billed as Fernández paying tribute to his father, Mexico and the "classic songs that are the soundtrack of Latino life."

The tour kicks off May 10 in Seattle and comes to San Antonio's Frost Bank Center on May 31, with Houston and Austin also set to host Fernández. He last performed at the venue in September 2023.

Vicente Fernández, who died in December 2021 at 81 years old, is one of the best-selling Mexican artists of all time. His albums have sold more than 50 million copies around the world, and he earned the nickname "The King of Ranchera Music." He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, as does Alejandro, whose latest album "Te Llevo en la Sangre" released earlier this year.

Last month his single "La Tóxica," a collaboration with Anitta, reached No. 1 on Billboard's Regional Mexican charts

"This tribute is not about me," Fernández said in a release announcing the tour. "It’s about Mexico, it’s about Vicente Fernández, in my voice and in all of our voices as we sing together the songs that have become a part of our common heritage.”

Tickets go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. CT.
