SAN ANTONIO — Readers all around the world are different. Some like short stories, some enjoy lovely giant books and the majority of Texas readers tend to enjoy dystopias, crimes and mysteries.

Researchers at Preply, a language learning app, analyzed Penguin's 100 must-read classics and Amazon's best-selling books for all 50 states. They also surveyed 1,000 readers in order to better understand reading habits, preferred genres and how preferences can relate to social and economic classes.

Their results revealed these key points:

  • "The Hunger Games" is the most popular book in Texas.
  • The most popular genre in Texas is classics.
  • "The Godfather" is the most popular summer read in Texas.
  • Texas residents prefer books that contain an average of 344 pages.
  • "The Hunger Games," "Lessons in Chemistry," and "The Outsiders," are the most searched-for books in the nation over the past year.
  • "Crave," "The Godfather," "To Kill a Mockingbird," "Beloved," and "Demon Copperhead," are the most popular summer reads in the United States.
  • Montana, Nebraska, and South Carolina are the states searching for the longest books.
  • Nearly 1 in 10 non-readers believed listening to an audiobook was “cheating” and didn’t count as reading.
  • Frequent readers earn 20% more income on average than non-readers, and science fiction readers earn the most.
  • 1 in 5 frequent readers admit they wouldn’t date a non-reader.
