SAN ANTONIO — Four Broadway productions will make their San Antonio debuts when they visit the Majestic Theatre stage next season, including a Tony-winning comedy and a tribute to a pop legend.

The 2024-25 Broadway in San Antonio season has been announced, bringing youthful heroes, grand heartbreak and jukebox classics to the downtown venue over 10 shows. Next season's schedule runs the gamut and provides evidence that there's art for every kind of theatergoer.

With that in mind, here's a look at the upcoming slate, broken down by the audience they're best suited for. Of course there will be overlap, but consider this a guide to help you consider which shows to plan for once tickets go on sale.

For the pop aficionados

The fall Broadway in San Antonio season will kick off with "MJ the Musical," a newer production whose narrative is framed around the behind-the-scenes planning of Michael Jackson's 1990s Dangerous World Tour, which was attended by 3.5 million people.

"MJ the Musical" is going national for the first time after winning four Tonys, including Best Choreography. It features more than two dozen of pop's greatest hits while "offering a rare look at the creative mind and collaborative spirit that catapulted Michael Jackson into legendary status, according to a release. "MJ the Musical" runs Sept. 24-29.

For fans of pop music with more international roots, "Mamma Mia!" is returning to the Alamo City for its 25th anniversary tour on April 1-6, 2025. Inspired by the music of ABBA and set on a Greek island paradise, it's the story of Sophie diving into her family history when three men from her mother's past return on the eve of her own wedding. Make sure to pack your dancing shoes.

For the cinephiles

Movie lovers might be aware of Sidney Lumet's sorta-maligned-but-sorta-beloved 1978 movie "The Wiz," which reimagined "The Wizard of Oz" with infusions of gospel, funk and soul. What they might not know is Lumet's film was itself an adaptation of a Broadway show that opened earlier that decade and won a slew of Tonys, including Best Musical.

"The Wiz" comes to San Antonio for the first time from May 6-11, 2025, when it tours for the first time in 40 years.

Immediately following "The Wiz" on next year's slate is the stage adaptation of Baz Luhrmann's infectious and kinetic "Moulin Rouge!," the story of romance sparking between a determined Bohemian and a famous cabaret singer. "Moulin Rouge! The Musical" sports a remixed soundtrack, boats a strong pedigree of Tony award-winning collaborators and will run at Majestic Theatre from May 27 to June 8, 2025.

For the families

Christmastime will bring the latest "Peter Pan" tour to San Antonio, giving Alamo City families a chance to witness one of the most beloved of fairy tales live. This newest musical adaptation comes from Native American playwright Larissa FastHorse and is being helmed by award-winning director Lonny Price. It flies onto the Majestic Theatre stage from Dec. 17-22.

For parents who dream a dream of introducing their children to the classics, there's the beloved show "Les Misérables," running from Jan. 29 to Feb. 2, 2025. It's been 24 years since the stage adaptation of Victor Hugo's novel premiered in France; this version was hailed for being "as rousing as ever" in a recent review.

Then there's the contemporary smash hit "Hadestown," which won eight of the 12 Tonys it was nominated for in 2019. A modern interpretation of two mythic stories – the romance between Orpheus and Eurydice as well as the love between King Hades and Persephone – "Hadestown" has been praised for its energy and inventive sets. It runs from Jan. 10-12, 2025.

For those who need a laugh

The newest show on this list, "Shucked," will make its San Antonio debut this holiday season after being nominated for Best Musical at the 2023 Tonys and pelting Broadway audiences silly with endless barrages of corn puns. The show follows Maizy's journey to help her corn-loving town after its beloved crop suddenly starts dying. It runs from Nov. 26 to Dec. 1.

For a more established comedic flavor, November will also bring a stage rendition of Tina Fey's beloved "Mean Girls" to the Majestic. This version of the Millennial story about high school survival of the fittest unites creative minds involved with various high-profile projects including "The Book of Mormon" and "Legally Blonde." It runs from Nov. 8-10.

Next spring will also bring the long-running "Funny Girl" back to San Antonio, featuring what Broadway in SA touts as "one of the greatest musical scores of all time." Barbra Streisand starred in the original production of this show about early-1900s comedian Fanny Brice before it was revived in 2022 with Lea Michelle in the lead role. It runs from Feb. 25 to March 2, 2025.

How to get tickets

Patrons have the option to register for the eCLUB option allowing them to buy tickets before general sale begins. Dates for when individual tickets go on sale will be announced later via the Majestic's website.

But subscription packages bundling together seven shows – "MJ," "Shucked," "Peter Pan," "Les Misérables," "Funny Girl," "The Wiz" and "Moulin Rouge!" – are now available, starting at $350. The remaining three productions can be added as season options.

Three shows remain for the current Broadway in San Antonio program: "The Book of Mormon," "Disney's Frozen" and "Clue."
