SAN ANTONIO — The "Queen of Tejano Music" will be recognized by the White House Monday evening for her lasting impact on music, according to her family.
Selena Quintanilla Pérez is set to be honored with the National Medal of Arts by President Biden and Dr. Jill Biden, her sister Suzette confirmed on Instagram.
Selena, who was tragically killed in March of 1995 at just 23 years old earned many accolades during and after her life including her historic win at the 36th GRAMMY Awards in 1994 for Best Mexican-American Performance for "LIVE." According to the GRAMMY Awards, this marked the first time a female Tejano artist won in that category.
Her fourth studio album, "Amor Prohibido," reached No. 29 on the Billboard 200, ultimately attaining double-platinum status. And her posthumous English-language crossover album, "Dreaming Of You," topped the Billboard 200, according to the GRAMMY Awards.
Selena was honored with the posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2021 GRAMMY Awards. Her father Abraham Quintanilla received the award in her honor, according to Billboard.
