GASTONIA, N.C. — Bo the bloodhound with the Gastonia Police Department is getting some time in the spotlight: Bo was named the Law Enforcement Hero Dog of the Year, and on the "Today" show Friday morning, he was named the Hero Dog Awards overall winner.
Bo was one of five dogs competing for the honor, which was announced live by NBC and American Humane on the "Today" show. The other dogs featured represented emerging hero and shelter dogs, service and hearing or guide dogs, military working dogs, and therapy dogs.
Bo, a beloved bloodhound who's been instrumental in finding missing people, tracking down suspects and supporting investigations, first brought home the prestigious national recognition for being Law Enforcement Hero Dog of the Year on Saturday, Oct. 19.
Bo's standout case was helping track down a missing child in a densely wooded area. The bloodhound tracked the boy's scent for 7 miles, leading to a safe rescue. Bo then helped calm the child, who was in distress, by licking him and playing with him. Sgt. David Rowland, Bo's handler, says his tracking success rate of 95% is well above the typical number for K-9s.

The Top Dog award is a well-deserved recognition of his hard work and commitment.”
