SAN ANTONIO -- Community Bible Church founder and lead pastor Robert Emmitt announced Sunday that the transition will begin for him to step into a lighter role with the church.

Emmitt started the church in May 1990 and says that they now have more than 27,000 people attending CBC's campus in San Antonio and its online church, which reaches more than 150 countries.

In a post online, Emmitt said that he and his wife are looking forward to a slower pace of life.

"I am enormously proud of all that we are building together in His name, and I will continue to be an active part of the CBC community while handing over day-to-day leadership to the energetic, very capable and dedicated Ed Newton," Emmitt said in a statement. "We are a grace and truth church. Grace means everyone is welcome and truth means we trust Jesus, read the Bible and do what it says. The next chapter in our story will remain focused on what matters: our collective commitment to Christ and a love of the Word of God."

Community Bible Church says the transition to Newton will take place over the next several months.
