GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. — The iconic Monster Cereals -- Count Chocula, Boo Berry and Franken Berry -- will soon be unearthed for another Halloween season, but this time there’s a new creature joining the spooky breakfast lineup in 2023.
General Mills has announced the addition of Carmella Creeper -- the first new character added to the annual cereal squad in 35 years. The limited-edition Carmella Creeper cereal features caramel apple-flavored pieces with colored monster marshmallows.
But what’s her story?
General Mills says Carmella Creeper is “a zombie DJ with an edgy sound who is always the life of the party.” She’s also the long-lost cousin of Franken Berry with “a fierce attitude and looks to match.”
Also new for 2023 is an updated edition of the Monster Mash Remix cereal, which features elements of all Monster Cereals in one box -- including Frute Brute and Yummy Mummy, which are no longer available as their own individual cereals.
You can score a box of this year's Monster Cereals when they return to store shelves nationwide later this summer.
Monster Cereals first screamed into breakfast bowls with the dastardly debut of Count Chocula and Franken Berry in March of 1971. General Mills says Boo Berry joined the group one year later in 1972 before expanding nationally in February of 1973.
All three were available year-round until 2009 when the cereals became seasonal products.
The legacy of Monster Cereals doesn't end there...
Frute Brute was first unleashed in 1974 before disappearing from the lineup in 1982. Yummy Mummy started stalking the breakfast aisle in 1988, but only stayed alive until 1992. Both remained behind the vault until briefly returning from the dead in 2013.
Frute Brute made his return again last year as part of a special multi-box package sold at select stores, but was not available as a standalone product.
