‘Keep voting’ | San Antonio boy in mullet competition hopes to buzz off contenders

The online contest raises money for wounded veterans and their families.

SAN ANTONIO — A San Antonio boy is on a mission to buzz off the competition.

Avery Quiroz, at 9 years old, is rocking a mullet. He's competing in the kids category for the national online competition Mullet Champ.

"I started it two years ago," he said. "My uncle inspired me to have it. I like the curls that he had."

Quiroz got the nickname "Texas Waterfall" from his dad.

"It was just better than all the other names," he said.

His hair is all business up front and party in the back.

"I just like the way it curls," Quiroz said.

He credits his barber Kevin Espinoza, whom he sees every two weeks at Fvded Attraction #2 off South WW White Road.

"It is really unique," Espinoza said. "It is something different. It is eye-catching."

Avery Quiroz is competing in an online contest for best kid mullet, while raising money for wounded veterans.

According to Quiroz's bio on his competition page, he views the mullet not as a fashion choice, but a lifestyle. The online competition is more than finding the kid with the best mullet; it raises funds for wounded service members and their families in partnership with the organization Homes for Wounded Warriors.

"If I win the third round, I would win the money, the prizes, (including) a GoPro and $5,000."

Quiroz said his mullet outshines the rest, and he's hoping to cut his way to victory. He is just asking for community support.

"I am out here representing San Antonio," he said. "So keep voting, I would appreciate the support."

Quiroz said if he wins the money, he wants to save it for college and go to UCLA. His ultimate goal: Suiting up to one day play for the New York Yankees.
