Newport News firefighters rescue a dog stuck in a tree. Yes, a dog in a tree.

Tater the bluetick hound's sense of adventure got the best of him earlier in the week.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Who says dogs can't climb trees?

Tater the bluetick hound feels he can do anything if he sets his mind to it... so when the cat he was chasing bolted up a tree, Tater followed close behind. 

It was only until the dog made it about 20 feet up that he realized his sense of adventure might have gotten the best of him.

That's where the Newport News Fire Department stepped in. Ladder 2 was called to the tree, and Senior Firefighter John Pearson and Firefighter Elijah Taylor were able to safely bring Tater down to Terra Firma.

Pearson did suffer a minor cut above his eye during the rescue but is expected to make a full recovery. Tater, meanwhile, was unharmed.

According to Fire Captain Joe Lord, the cat was the winner of this chase.

"Cat laughed at the dog, climbed down on its own after Tater was rescued," the Newport News Fire Department said in a social media post.
