2-year-old Belgian Malinois mix named Dodger has lived whole life at shelter | Forgotten Friends

He is the only one not yet adopted of the seven found right outside the gate of God's Dogs Rescue in February of 2022.

VON ORMY, Texas — Our "Forgotten Friends" series showcases a dog or cat each week that has spent a lengthy time at an area shelter, just waiting for someone to notice them and bring them home to love.

This week, we went to God's Dogs Rescue in Von Ormy to meet Dodger, a 2-year-old Belgian Malinois and German Shepherd mix who was with a group of seven dogs that literally rescued themselves by hanging out on the road outside of their gate back in February of 2022. The dogs, who were all different sizes, ages and breeds have all been adopted now leaving Dodger as the only one left from the group.

In that time, Dodger has grown from a cute, playful puppy into a gangly teenager who is always ready to play, said shelter staff.

"We've watched Dodger grow up at the rescue homebase property," said Theresa Gummow with God's Dogs Rescue.

Dodger loves to run, play and splash in the water. He does great in a crate and really loves to go for rides in a car.

"Dodger is a happy and excited boy who loves to wag his tail and makes lots of noise," said shelter staff. "He's a very sweet and polite boy who loves to cuddle on the couch or bed, or even sit down right next to you."

He gets along great with everybody, young and old. And once the initial excitement wears off, he does well on a leash, too.

"He has a ton of energy to spare and wants to use it running around, playing fetch, or going on long walks," said the shelter. "He'll need lots of activity and would be great with another active dog and active kids."

Do you want to make Dodger a part of your family?

For whoever adopts Dodger Lucy's Doggy Daycare & Spa will be lending a paw by offering them a free "Glow Up" Day at the Spa, which includes a massage therapy bath and Pawdicure. One of Lucy's most cherished core values is to continue Lucy’s legacy of giving back to pups in need, as Lucy herself was a rescue!
