Abilene has been at shelter for more than 900 days now | Forgotten Friends

She loves car rides, people, being a lap dog, playing with dogs, even ones smaller than her, children and expending energy all day all the time.

VON ORMY, Texas — Our "Forgotten Friends" series showcases a dog or cat each week that has spent a lengthy time at an area shelter, just waiting for someone to notice them and bring them home to love.

This week, we went to God's Dogs Rescue in Von Ormy to meet Abilene, a five and a half-year-old American pitbull terrier mix who is super friendly and has waited over 950 days for someone to scoop her up. The rescue can't figure out why because she would make someone a fabulous companion. She has a beautiful golden and creamed colored coat and weighs about 65 pounds.

Abilene was found by a God's Dogs rescue foster running in an intersection, and was almost was hit by a car several times before the foster opened her door and she jumped into the car. That was back in September of 2021. This girl is pure love combined with a little stubbornness. Abilene loves affection, so she would appreciate a family that will give her lots of cuddles, hugs and attention.

She loves to go for car rides, loves people, being a lap dog, playing with dogs, even ones smaller than her, children and expending energy all day all the time.

"Abilene will need a lot of activity and exercise to keep her healthy and happy," said  Julianne Marchbanks, Founder and CEO, God's Dogs Rescue.

She is potty-trained, crate-trained, and leash-trained but sometimes she can get just a little bit excited, so she might forget what she knows. Abilene adores being petted and really loves her treats.

She is always a fan favorite when God's Dogs brings her to adoption events. "She even has her own fan base at the Home and Garden Shows we attend twice a year, and yet she remains at homebase waiting for her family," said Julianne.

Sadly, for whatever reason the person that is meant for her just has not shown up to bring her home.

Abilene would love to be the only dog in your home, but she has been proven to get along with other big or medium sized dogs that are not dominent or have high energy. She is not really a fan of cats.

God's Dogs believes she would do best with a family that has older kids that is super laid back in general.

"She wants a real family who will cherish her as she deserves," said Julianne.

She is current on all her vaccinations, spayed and very healthy.

"She would fill a home with love and snorting and farting and snoring, who doesn't want that," said Julianne. "Abilene has been overlooked for way too long."

Would you like to adopt Abilene into your family?

For whoever adopts Abilene Lucy's Doggy Daycare & Spa will be lending a paw by offering them a free "Glow Up" Day at the Spa, which includes a massage therapy bath and Pawdicure. One of Lucy's most cherished core values is to continue Lucy’s legacy of giving back to pups in need, as Lucy herself was a rescue!
