KERRVILLE, Texas — UPDATE 3/16

We are delighted to let everyone know that Champ has been adopted by Warriors Heart and is training to become a service animal for a veteran. Warriors Heart animals can be helpful partners for veterans suffering from chemical dependency, PTSD or Traumatic Brain Injuries. This sweet dog deserves his happy ending!

Best of luck to you, Champ!

Our "Forgotten Friends" series showcases a dog or cat each week that has spent a lengthy time at an area shelter, just waiting for someone to notice them and bring them home to love.

This week, we meet an American Bulldog mix named Champ who was dumped like unwanted trash by his previous owner a few weeks ago at AWS Freeman Fritts Animal Shelter in Kerrville and is now heartbroken.

"It all started with lots of commotion outside of the clinic," said the shelter. " We found an unknown dog on our property, and after quickly securing the sweet boy, we scanned him for a chip. We were thrilled to discover he had one, but our joy turned bittersweet when we learned his owner no longer WANTED him. Simply put, he discarded him. He left him."

Champ is about four years old, and weighs about 85 pounds. He is healthy, vaccinated and neutered. He is potty trained and does great on a leash. Shelter staff says he'd be a great addition to any family, as long as they don't have any cats. He gets along pretty well with other dogs though.

"We believe Champ tried his hardest to follow his owner and go after him," said shelter staff. "This is the only guy he knew and who he thought hung the moon. In fact, Champ still thinks this. Days later, and he still looks for his dad at every walk, and every time the door opens."

He is worth so much more and deserves more love than his previous owner showed him.

Champ is a gentle giant with a heart of gold. One look into his sweet eyes and you can tell that he’s truly an old soul just ready to be somebody’s couch potato.

Shelter staff think Champ would have no problems adapting to either a super chill home or even an active one. As long as there is plenty of love, he will do just fine.

Like most dogs, he loves to be petted and adores treats.

The folks at Freeman Fritts are hoping they can find a new home for him quickly, because he is really sad at the shelter, and they are worried about his well-being.

For whoever adopts Champ, Lucy's Doggy Daycare & Spa will be lending a paw by offering them a free "Glow Up" Day at the Spa, which includes a massage therapy bath and Pawdicure. One of Lucy's most cherished core values is to continue Lucy’s legacy of giving back to pups in need, as Lucy herself was a rescue!
