Howdy lost the only home he's ever known after his human died | Forgotten Friends

This English Pointer mix is about six years old and just wants to be loved and given endless snacks.

CANYON LAKE, Texas — Our "Forgotten Friends" series showcases a dog or cat each week that has spent a lengthy time at an area shelter, just waiting for someone to notice them and bring them home to love.

This week’s Forgotten Friend is a six-year-old English Pointer mix named Howdy, that was pulled from another shelter's euthanasia list last month by the Canyon Lake Animal Shelter Society (CLASS). The shelter was overcrowded so he was facing certain death until CLASS stepped in.

"Howdy is a mature and wise gentleman with a heart of gold and a vibrant, infectious personality that lights up any room," said Stacie Shmidl, CLASS. "His zest for life is contagious, and his presence alone brings warmth and joy to those around him."

Stacie told us that Howdy was the beloved member of a family for his whole life, until his owner tragically died and Howdy's world turned upside down.

"He was showered with love and attention for six years until his human passed away, leaving him without the home and companionship he knew and loved," said Stacie. "Despite his sadness and confusion, he remains hopeful as he patiently waits for a new family to love and be loved by."

Howdy is super sweet and friendly and just wants to be included and loved. He enjoys walks, car rides, or just lounging around the house with his people close by. He knows some basic commands like sit and stay, is already potty-trained and not destructive at all.

"This well-mannered pup prefers to wait patiently for his outdoor breaks, even if it means holding it until you return from a long day at work," said Stacie. "Adding to his charm, Howdy knows sit and often sits before being asked to when it’s treat time."

Howdy still has plenty of spunk and playful energy, too.

"He is a true people pleaser, thriving on human affection and just wants to be part of everything you do," said Stacie. "Whether it’s snuggling on the couch for a quiet evening or accompanying you on weekend adventures, he’ll be by your side offering unconditional love."

There is nothing he'd like better than getting some loving pets, a few hugs some kind words and of course, unlimited snacks. In return you will get uncontrollable tail wags, sweet, sloppy kisses and unwavering loyalty.

"When it’s time for an outing, Howdy will eagerly hop into your car with a big smile on his face in anticipation of the fun ahead," said Stacie. "Even though his excitement may cause him to pull on the leash at first, he quickly settles down, ready to enjoy the walk at your side."

Howdy gets along great with other dogs but is not a big fan of cats. Shelter staff think he would be a great addition to any family with or without kids.

He loves running and rough housing with other dogs, going on long walks to explore all of nature’s beauty, and tossing around his favorite toys.

Howdy is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed, heartworm negative and on monthly flea/tick/heartworm prevention. The only thing he needs is you!

With his combination of spunk, sweetness, and a heart full of love, Howdy is ready to bring endless joy and companionship to the next lucky family that welcomes him into their lives.

If you'd like to adopt Howdy, please contact the Canyon Lake Animal Shelter Society. To fill out an application, visit their website here.

For whoever adopts Howdy, Lucy's Doggy Daycare & Spa will be lending a paw by offering them a free "Glow Up" Day at the Spa, which includes a massage therapy bath and Pawdicure. One of Lucy's most cherished core values is to continue Lucy’s legacy of giving back to pups in need, as Lucy herself was a rescue!
