KERRVILLE, Texas — Our "Forgotten Friends" series showcases a dog or cat each week that has spent a lengthy time at an area shelter, just waiting for someone to notice them and bring them home to love.
This week's Forgotten Friend named Shadow has been surrendered not once, but twice to Kerr County Animal Services, through no fault of her own. She is now patiently waiting at Kerrville Pets Alive for someone to give her a forever home.
"She can't catch a break," said Karen Guerriero, Kerrville Pets Alive. "She was surrendered to animal control by a family because their child kept being rough with her. Then she was adopted from animal control and returned AGAIN because the new family did not have enough time for her."
Shadow is a two-year-old Dutch Shepherd that weighs about 45 pounds.
"Dutch Shepherds are loyal, reliable, alert, watchful, active, independent, intelligent, and intuitive," according to the American Kennel Club. "Obedience and discipline can be achieved with remarkable results."
The breed is a true herding dog and they work willingly with their owners, dealing independently with any task they are assigned, being neither aggressive nor shy.
"She does well with dogs her own size, but small dogs frighten her, so she shouldn't be with them or cats either," said Karen.
She loves to play and go for rides in the car. Shadow is also a very quick learner. She can be a little shy when she first meets you, but give her a little time to warm up and she's a cuddle bug.

"She did great at the adoption event we had recently," said shelter staff. "She was friendly and interacted with the other dogs well ,and was submissive to strangers she met."
Shadow is already house-trained.
"She would make a wonderful pet for the right person," said shelter staff.
Shadow is spayed, up to date on all of her vaccines and heartworm negative. She is ready for her new, permanent home!
