Fun-loving dog named Cu Chulainn gets adopted | Forgotten Friends

This 2-year-old Labrador mix had been waiting to be noticed at the shelter for a little over two months.

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas — UPDATE 10/29

We are happy to update that Cu Chulainn was adopted. He went to get cleaned up at a local groomer and fell in love with a Rottweiler lady, whose owner always wanted another dog. Best of luck to Choo Choo in his new home with his new girlfriend!

Our "Forgotten Friends" series showcases a dog or cat each week that has spent time at an area shelter, just waiting for someone to notice them and bring them home to love.

This week’s Forgotten Friend is named after a mythical Irish warrior known for his great battle prowess. Cu Chulainn, pronounced Koo KUL-in, is more affectionately known as "Choo Choo" by the shelter staff at the Humane Society in New Braunfels (HSNBA). Will at HSNBA told us that he didn't think Choo Choo would be there long enough for staff to have to become proficient at pronouncing his name. He was brought in with two other dogs by Comal County Animal Control, one of which has already found a home.

Choo Choo has been at the shelter now for a little over two months, just waiting for the right person to choose him to bring home to love.

"Cu Chulainn's sleek black coat and soulful eyes capture attention, but it's his brave spirit and loving soul that truly make him shine," said shelter staff.

He's a little over two years old and weighs in at about 58 pounds.

He has done well on his doggy day outs, both within play groups and pack walks with other dogs. Shelter staff recommends that if you have another dog at home, schedule a meet and greet to see if the two dogs will get along.

"While Cu Chulainn is adventurous and brave in established situations, he seems to have a sheltered puppyhood before arriving at the shelter, and new experiences might cause him to be a bit timid," said shelter staff. "But the second time he is absolutely ready to go!"

Labs are friendly, outgoing, and high-spirited companions who have more than enough affection to go around for a family looking for a medium-to-large dog, according to the American Kennel Club. The breed is also very athletic and requires lots of exercise, like swimming and marathon games of fetch, to keep physically and mentally fit.

"Cu Chulainn forms deep bonds with those he loves, making him both a vigilant guardian and a loyal companion," said shelter staff. "His playful spirit and fondness for toys reveal a softer side, as he delights in games that challenge his sharp mind and athletic prowess."

Choo Choo, or maybe we should say "chew chew," still chews up toys and has lots of energy for hikes and long excursions. He doesn't pull hard on his leash either.

Choo Choo is healthy, current on all of his vaccines, and neutered.

He would be the perfect friend for a family with children.

"If you seek a companion as spirited as he is affectionate, Cu Chulainn is your match made in mythic realms," said shelter staff.

Plus, if you adopt Cu Chulainn before October 15, the fee is only $25 thanks to the Bissell Pet Foundation's "Clear the Shelter" event.
