Overlooked no more! Gibson has a home | Forgotten Friends

A KENS 5 viewer saw his story on our social media page and rushed to Kerrville to scoop him up.

KERRVILLE, Texas — It may have taken three years, but Gibson finally has his very own home and someone to love him! A KENS 5 viewer saw his story on our social media page and rushed to Kerrville to scoop him up. We will share a photo as soon as we get one!

Happy life, Gibson! ❤️️

Our "Forgotten Friends" series showcases a dog or cat each week that has spent a lengthy time at an area shelter, just waiting for someone to notice them and bring them home to love.

This week's Forgotten Friend is Gibson, a five-year-old Golden Retriever and Duck Tolling Retriever mix that was found wandering around and brought to the Kathleen Cailloux Humane Society in Kerrville three years ago in April of 2021. He has been waiting for someone to show up and choose him to love ever since. That's more than three years, which is like 31 in dog years.

"Since he was found by Animal Control as a stray, we don’t know if someone abandoned him or if he got lost," said the shelter. "But his owner never came to reclaim him and the Humane Society took him in."

"Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers are intelligent, affectionate, and eager to please, as well as quite rare," according to the AKC Kennel Club.

Gibson is extremely healthy and has a gorgeous golden and reddish coat of fur with white markings and beautiful green eyes. He simply adores going on walks and does really well on a leash. And bonus... he's already housebroken.

"He loves going for rides in the car and loads up effortlessly," said the shelter.

As for getting along with other dogs, he's pretty tolerant of the majority of dogs that he's been around, but doesn't like ones that are too wild or overly energetic.

Gibson is not a big fan of cats though, just preferring to chase them around.

"He may have been overlooked by potential adopters because he barks for attention when you approach his kennel," said shelter staff. "It can appear that he might have too much energy, but as soon as you get him out he immediately settles down. And when he's had a chance to relax outside of the building he is a completely different dog."

And Gibson absolutely adores children.

"Based on his reaction when kids come to the shelter, we think he might have lived with children in his home," said shelter staff. "When he recently met a family with a young boy, it was the happiest we have ever seen him in his three years here."

Some of his other favorite things include getting pets from anyone and everyone and enjoying a treat or two. He also loves having his back scratched.

"He has an exuberant, and playful personality but is also very happy and calm when he’s being petted," said shelter staff. "We think he’d make an amazing family dog as he adores being around children and love’s affection."

Gibson is current on all of his vaccinations and has been neutered.

"We wish people could see his true personality instead of him just being desperate to get out of his kennel," said shelter staff.
