BULVERDE, Texas — Our "Forgotten Friends" series showcases a dog or cat each week that has spent a lengthy time at an area shelter, just waiting for someone to notice them and bring them home to love.
This week’s Forgotten Friend is a 3-year-old happy hound and pointer mix named Wyatt who is back at Bulverde Area Humane Society (BAHS) waiting for someone to make him a part of their family. He first arrived at the shelter back in June of 2023, was adopted in November, then returned in January through no fault of his own.
Shelter staff say the adopters brought Wyatt back because they said he didn't like it when their child would approach his food bowl while he was eating. Wyatt has been tested on this "issue" but he hasn't shown any aggression at all when they get near him while he's eating. They've even tried messing with his bowl while he is actively eating and he didn't react at all.
Wyatt gets along really well with other dogs. "He's a true Pointer and fixates on other animals and gets in the Pointer stance while staring them down," said Amy Clayton, shelter volunteer.
He has never been around cats, so that's an unknown. "Pointers are generally friendly and affectionate, and can get along well with cats if introduced when they are young," according to the American Kennel Club. "But some pointer breeds may not be as compatible with cats due to their hunting instincts." Perhaps if they are introduced slowly it might work out.
Wyatt loves to run, so he'd really like to be adopted by an active family with either only adults or older kids. No small kids.
"When out in our play yards, he runs and runs and runs and runs and runs," said Amy. "He's truly obsessed with people and seems to love his life."
He is really a people person and loves being petted and getting attention, as well as affection.
"Wyatt is just a happy hound," said Amy. "He gets the cutest wiggle butt and absolutely can't contain his excitement when someone approaches his kennel."
He is also very treat-motivated.
Wyatt is healthy, vaccinated, chipped and waiting for you at the Bulverde Area Humane Society.
For whoever adopts Wyatt, Lucy's Doggy Daycare & Spa will be lending a paw by offering them a free "Glow Up" Day at the Spa, which includes a massage therapy bath and Pawdicure. One of Lucy's most cherished core values is to continue Lucy’s legacy of giving back to pups in need, as Lucy herself was a rescue!
If you are interested in adding Wyatt into your family, please email bahshelter@yahoo.com.
The fee to adopt Wyatt would be $100, which covers the cost of his healthcare, all vaccinations, flea preventative and more. The lower fee is because he has been at the shelter for more than a year.

BAHS hosts a Reading to the Cats and Dogs event every month. The next one will be held on Monday, May 27. Grab your favorite book and come out to read to their animals from 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.
All ages are welcome and the pets love it! There is no sign up necessary, all you need to do is arrive the day of the event with a book and closed toe shoes. After you get there, meet with them for a quick orientation before going off to read aloud to the dogs and cats. It's a great chance for kids to brush up on their reading skills while making the animals feel loved. Everyone benefits. Also great for older folks as well. Connect with animals while keeping your brain active.
