Hunter was left tied to a mailbox by his family when they moved | Forgotten Friends

In spite of that, Hunter still loves humans.

KERRVILLE, Texas — Our "Forgotten Friends" series showcases a dog or cat each week that has spent a lengthy time at an area shelter, just waiting for someone to notice them and bring them home to love.

This week's Forgotten Friend named Hunter was left tied to a mailbox when his family moved, leaving him behind alone and forgotten. That is until Kerrville Pets Alive stepped up and saved him from the euthanasia list at the county shelter six months ago after they determined that he was a super quick-learner and could be trained to be the bestest boy ever.

Hunter is a tricolor shepherd mix who is about two and half years old. He currently weighs about 56 pounds and is healthy, athletic and very handsome. He is current on all of his shots and has also been neutered.

You might think that he would not like humans very much after being abandoned, but you'd be wrong.

"Hunter loves everyone he meets," said KPA! "He came to the local county shelter with very few dog skills, EXCEPT how to chase the ball, carry it to the top of the hill, and chase it down the hill again."

He would do that over and over again. Then he discovered that humans could throw the ball further, but he still didn't want to give up.

"A qualified dog trainer came to the shelter for a consultation and educated the volunteers on how to convince him to "give us the ball," said KPA!

Did we mention that Hunter loves to chase after balls?

It turns out that Hunter learns really fast, and has excellent tracking skills. Those are just some of the reasons KPA! pulled him from the euthanasia list at the county shelter and now he's just waiting for a new human to notice him and fall in love.

Hunter has learned how to sit or stand beside his caregiver and wait for attention. He loves being petted and is very loving.

He is currently with a foster who has a Husky that Hunter gets along very well with, and did not show any aggression towards other dogs while he was at the shelter. He hasn't really been exposed to any cats.

Hunter is crate-trained and they are working with him on being house-trained. He is a very smart boy and figures out new things he is introduced to very quickly.

You would not be disappointed if you decided to bring Hunter home.
