Our "Forgotten Friends" series showcases a dog or cat each week that has spent time at an area shelter, just waiting for someone to notice them and bring them home to love.

On this week’s Forgotten Friends we meet Swisher a shepherd, terrier and pit bull mix who was found as a stray by the Humane Society in New Braunfels (HSNBA) with a gunshot wound to his back leg.

When Swisher first arrived at the shelter, they noticed he wasn’t putting any weight on his back leg. A quick trip to the vet told them that he had been shot! Luckily for him the bullet went straight through his leg and he is healing up nicely.

Shelter staff says he loves to cuddle and seems to be very people-oriented and will likely be what they call a ‘velcro-dog,' which means he’ll be very attached to his human.

He loves to play, and is motivated by treats. He seems to get along well with other dogs and cats, too!

Swisher is healthy, vaccinated and neutered. He walks pretty well on a leash, but can get excited and pull a little.

"The veterinarian explained that Swisher may have some issues with his leg later in life," said HSNBA. "He'll likely develop arthritis earlier in that leg and if he ever has another injury it, it could cause further damage since there is shrapnel in the leg that cannot be removed. As of now he's healing great and doesn't seem to be in any pain."

He’d do best with a family with older kids, or a single adult that has the time to play with him and take him for walks.

"Swisher loves to play with toys, mostly chase and tug of war," said shelter staff. "He is also very treat-motivated and will sit politely, but watch your fingers. He does tend to get excited and will chomp down a bit too quickly sometimes."

The Humane Society in New Braunfels says they think he’ll be happy as long as he has a person to call his own.

"We think he's pretty happy to do most activities as long as he has his person with him," said HSNBA.
