LULING, Texas — UPDATE 10/16
This might just be one of the best updates ever! After waiting 521 days at the Luling Animal Welfare Society for someone to notice her, Zani left the shelter on Monday with her new humans.
We wish her all the best and much love in her new home.
--------------------------
We first told you about Zani back in February, so wanted to update that she is still waiting for her home. She needs a loving home with no other pets or kids, commonly referred to as a "unicorn home." The shelter tells us that there has not been a single inquiry about adopting Zani.
Zani recently went on a field trip with The Long Stay Project.
"Thanks to your donations, Zani and I were able to have a pool date at K9 Water World," said the Long Stay Project. "I only felt it was appropriate to buy her a unicorn floatie since she needs a unicorn home (no kids or other pets)!"
Zani has now been waiting for over a year for a home. With the temperatures this high and spending over a year on a concrete floor, this senior lady could really use a foster break.
If you have a kid and pet free home and are interested in adopting or fostering Zani, you must contact Luling Animal Welfare Society - LAWS directly.

The folks at LAWS are gearing up for their big fundraiser of the year, a 5K that is the weekend before the town’s big annual Watermelon festival, the Luling Watermelon Thump. The race is called the Thumpin’ 5K, so this year they are featuring their four longest stays running “voting” (hopefully adopting or fostering) campaigns for “Thump Pup” copying the way the local highschoolers run for Thump Queen.
Each dog will have a Thump Pup poster displayed at the race made by one of their human friends as well as small voting signs on one strip of the 5k. A ballot box will be located on site at the race June 22.
You can also show your support for this adorable dog by voting for her to be named the 2024 Thump Pup at the Luling Watermelon Thump June 27-30.

Our "Forgotten Friends" series showcases a dog or cat each week that has spent a lengthy time at an area shelter, just waiting for someone to notice them and bring them home to love.
Zani is a a seven and a half-year-old American Bulldog mix who was brought to the Luling Animal Welfare Society (LAWS) in May of 2023, after being found as a stray. She has spent the last nine months inside the shelter, except for when she gets taken on overnight "field trips" that give her a break from the noise and commotion inside the shelter.
LAWS scanned her for a microchip when she first arrived, which tracked her adoption from an Austin rescue back when she was a puppy. They were able to get in touch with her previous owner's ex-boyfriend, who hadn't seen the owner in more than five years. He also had no idea how to get in touch with her.
Zani would do best in what is known as a "unicorn home," meaning no other animals and no small kids.
"Zani is our longest stay resident," said shelter staff. "We know finding a "unicorn" home can be challenging, but we also know there is the perfect fit for her out there and in her correct set up she will be such a wonderful companion."

Staff say she is medium to medium-low energy and is very easy to handle. She is house-trained, crate-trained and has proven to be trustworthy when left to her own devices. She is not destructive and can entertain herself. But she also enjoys snuggle time when someone gives her some attention.
Zani would love to have a fenced in yard, so she has room to run and play when she wants to. She loves treats and chew bones.
"She loves pets and will often flop over for belly rubs or gently give you a paw to let you know she would like more if you stop petting her too soon," said shelter staff.
Zani is healthy, heartworm negative, up to date on her vaccinations and has been spayed.
"Zani is a fun, silly, sweet girl," said shelter staff. "She enjoys toys, but especially prefers tiny toys made for small dogs or puppies. She will roll over onto her back and hold them with her paws like an otter, and she loves to chase flys. She enjoys a good hike or stroll, but is also super content to just chill on the couch."
Zani is on a lot of rescue folks in Texas' radar, with all of them working to try and find and find her a permanent, loving home. The Long Stay Project in Austin is another one of those organizations.
So who is ready to step up and give Zani her a loving home and be her human? It only takes one special person to make her doggy dreams come true and you will have a best friend for life.
For whoever adopts Zani, Lucy's Doggy Daycare & Spa will be lending a paw by offering them a free "Glow Up" Day at the Spa, which includes a massage therapy bath and Pawdicure. One of Lucy's most cherished core values is to continue Lucy’s legacy of giving back to pups in need, as Lucy herself was a rescue!
