Hole-in-the-wall barbecue joint worth a trip to Adkins, Texas | Neighborhood Eats

This east side restaurant is worth your day trip time and money.

SAN ANTONIO — Who's up for their next San Antonio day trip? We were! And it's not far! Just over to Adkins, Texas on the far eastside of the city is where you'll find Texas Pride Barbecue!

"We're an experience," Owner Tony Talanco said.

It looks more like an area gas station than a barbeque  joint, but that's part of the attraction!

"I call it the most unique BBQ joint in the world," Tony said. "My family has been in the restaurant business for over 100 years. We have BBQ, yes, but there's lots more to it."

There's no doubt about that as we saw firsthand! You'll find yourself with all the Texas country feels you could want with some blast from the past too!

"You know the name 'Texas Pride' is not only the name, but it's my pride in Texas," Tony said.

Tony told us people come from all over the state to experience what they have to offer, and especially since they were featured some years ago on 'Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives'.

"Once people come, they look at it and say I've never seen anything like this," Tony said. "We found that is a great compliment."

There is certainly lots that appeals to their local customer base, those that day trip around greater San Antonio, and those that come from the further reaches of the state.

"We make our own sides," Tony said. "We don't buy anything precooked. Lots of people love our brisket because it is more tender. You don't need a knife to cut it. You don't need good teeth to eat it. It just really has that great mesquite (wood) flavor," he added.

Mesquite wood is the kind that Texas Pride uses for their BBQ pits, and one can certainly taste the effect. For me, it started with their Brisket Nachos. Really good! We followed that by something I'd never even considered, Chicken Fried Brisket! And you heard that right.

"It's got cream gravy on it," Tony said. "What it is is our cooked briskets which we then Shiner Bock Beer batter it, deep fry it and serve it with gravy."

Tony was not kidding! It was AMAZING!

Texas Pride BBQ offers mesquite smoked brisket.

And of course no BBQ joint visit is complete without some dessert!

"The next most popular item we have is our cobblers, pecan pie cobbler and our peach cobbler," he said.

I was happy to partake in some dessert before dinner, and wow, TWO THUMBS UP!

It was easy to see that Texas Pride BBQ takes tons of 'pride' in what they offer customers. It is certainly the full food experience!

"We are proud of our business. My daughter is proud of it. My son 'n law is proud of it. We are here everyday around the clock. We are always working on this place, and when we're not we're looking at other ways to see what we can bring to Texas Pride," Tony said.
