Made in S.A.: Serenity Shells

Local artist brings the serenity of the ocean into your home.

SAN ANTONIO — Similar to walking the beach, it's a scavenger hunt to find the perfect shell.

"They're so different. The different textures and shapes, that they can actually really be used for anything,"  Serenity Shells, owner Rebecca Power said.

For Rebecca Power these shells are art.

"Even when I was a kid my mom and dad would take us to the coast and it was one of my favorite things," Power said. "You really can't ask for anything better to use for art than seashells, because even by themselves they are beautiful."

Shapes and colors adorn her crosses, mermaids and other shapes.

"That creative expression gets to come out a little bit whereas typically I do my job so this is nice," Power said.

For this new mom and school psychologist, this new "side hustle" is a way to decompress.

"It's a break from paperwork and that type of things and it's something a creative expression that we really don't do in our jobs and I enjoy that," Power said.

Even if you can't recreate your happy place, Power recommends finding something that brings you serenity.

"Just make it your thing, create 'you' time, that way you can also distress at the end of the day. If you take care of yourself you can also take care of others better, and I think we forget that a lot of times because we are too busy being superwomen," Power said.
