An entrepreneur opened an outdoor-only SA restaurant four months ago. The heat now has him restrategizing.

"It is tiring. It takes a toll," said the owner of Cubby's Eatery. "I understand people don't want to come out."

SAN ANTONIO — The never-ending heat is posing a hazard and raising power bills, but it's also heavily impacting a new south-side business.

Cubby's Eatery, which only has outdoor seating, is struggling with customers. The restaurant is located off Nogalitos and Saldana Street. Jacob Campos is the owner, and opened up shop just four months ago, when the Alamo City was merely on the doorstep of a historic heat wave

"It is just something I have always dreamed of," he said. “I wanted to bring something a little different here other than tacos or Subway, McDonald's."

He's known for his sandwiches, and also has agua frescas and snacks too.

"My food is fresh," he said. "I feel like it was something that was lacking here."

The south-side shop is so small that it takes just Campos and his wife to make the food inside. Cubby's Eatery is a walk-up-and-order kind of operation.

"If the weather wasn't as hot as it is, it wouldn't be a problem," Campos said. "It is super-hot. I don't have a dining area, or indoor space for them. It is unhealthy, really."

The sweltering heat is not something Campos ordered up.

“We are used to the heat," he said. "But we are not used to weeks on end of 105, 103. It is tiring. It takes a toll. I understand people don't want to come out."

Campos said on a good day he would see up to 50 customers. Now, the daily customers number around 10. Add onto that the issue of outdoor-only seating, and it's forcing the new business owner to restrategize.

"It is just too hot," Campos said. "I would rather shut it down than have people wait."

Campos is now closing earlier, even shutting down entirely on some days. Meanwhile, his message is simple: Support local.

"We love our community," he said. "We are from the south side."

In terms of when they will be open, moving forward Campos is taking it week by week. For more information, click here.
