The Good News Burgers, formerly Papa's, closes two San Antonio locations

The owner said he had to close the locations due to a variety of challenges, from a forced rebrand to non-negotiable lease agreements.

SAN ANTONIO — A San Antonio burger joint is shutting down two of its locations.

Over the weekend, The Good News Burgers made the announcement to restructure on social media, citing a 'few obstacles.'

Owner Robert Walker said The Good News Burgers located on San Pedro closed on May 18, and last Friday, a second location closed on Potranco.

"It was just difficult to build the business up with a small window of time that we had to establish it," said Walker.

The burger joint, which has been open since 2013, has seen better days. 'Best Burger' banners hang in the dark San Pedro location.

"We've dealt with a lot since COVID," he said.

Walker said the rebranding of his restaurant is one of the reasons why. Formerly known as Papa's Burgers, the joint changed its names last June after receiving a cease and desist notice from Houston's Pappas Restaurants in 2021. Another reason, Walker said, was the increase of transient traffic in the area which was driving away business.

"Unfortunately, because of that we ended up taking a 70% hit in our sales," Walker said.

Walker said he made attempts to save business but ultimately couldn't reconcile finances with the shopping center off San Pedro. Faced with adversity, Walker said he's growing from the experience.

"I'm learning through all of this and I know that this is just a minor setback."

Two other locations remain open at this time.
