Keep SA Local: Sangria on the Burg brightens spirits

"I didn't go to culinary school. I learned things on my own," the restaurant's owner said.

SAN ANTONIO — Ceasar Zepeda grew up cooking alongside his extended family. They taught him the secrets to success in the kitchen.

"When the smell of my food reminds me of my grandpa's house, I know it's perfect," Zepeda said. "I didn't go to culinary school. I learned things on my own."

Zepeda moved to San Antonio several years ago to study business at UTSA. After earning his degree, he stayed in the Alamo City to join the food scene. After learning from other restaurant owners and climbing up the culinary ladder, he opened Sangria on the Burg in 2016.

The restaurant sits on Fredericksburg Road in the Medical Center. It combines Texas barbeque with Mexican spices, adding flavor to an area that was lacking it for a while. The menu offers tacos, sliders, salads and desserts. You can pair your meal with a sangria flight or specialty cocktail.

Zepeda said business has been cut in half since the start of the pandemic, but he doesn't let that affect the quality of his work or his food.

"I'm doing it for my staff and the regulars who come in," Zepeda said. "It's been amazing to have companies in town and our neighborhoods supporting us and keeping us going."
