SAN ANTONIO — If you want to be healthier, you've got to eat the right food.
Justin Ray caters to health-conscious people caught up in busy schedules. At Sunrayz Juice and Kitchen, you can get nutritious meals to-go.
"We build everything from scratch," Ray said. "The process and thought behind everything we do is to get everything macro balanced and as preservative-free as possible."
He's been in the fitness industry for several years. During that time, he noticed people paid a lot of attention to the exercise component while overlooking their nutrition.
"It kind of gets left behind," Ray said. "People have a lot of questions and that's why I'm here!"
With his certification in sports nutrition, he's learned how to make healthier versions of guilty-pleasure meals like pasta and tacos.
"We're a one-stop shop," Ray said. "We have cold-pressed juices, we have all-natural smoothies and we have made-from-scratch meal prep."
Ray said operating in a pandemic has been a struggle. He said that, in some months, sales were down 75%.
"We got hit hard," Ray said. "People kind of fell off their wagon as far as being healthy, and gyms have slowed down a lot. I do a lot of my revenue through partnerships with gyms. Whenever they're affected, I'm affected."
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, typical American diets exceed the recommended intake levels in four categories: calories from solid fats and added sugars, refined grains, sodium, and saturated fats.
"We lead the world in heart disease, diabetes and everything of that nature," Ray said. "Food can cure all that. So I feel more driven than ever to keep going."
Ray hopes people with resolutions to improve their health stop by his business.
"We'd love to help you get back on track," Ray said. "It's January, so it's time to set goals for a new year and a new you."
