The only bookstore on San Antonio's south side asks for help amid financial struggles

Dead Tree Books said that they would be downsizing and asked avid readers to help them reduce inventory by buying a book or donating.

SAN ANTONIO — Editor's note: The video above is from 2019.

The only bookstore on the south side of San Antonio is downsizing and asking for help amid financial struggles.

Dead Tree Books took to social media on Wednesday, calling on readers to help them clear out inventory by purchasing a book before the store moves locations. The store is currently located at 5645 S Flores, and they also sell books on Amazon, eBay, Biblio, and their own website.

"The more we sell now, the faster we will be able to reopen," the bookstore added in a follow-up post. "We want to up and running again quickly, but we need the help and love of the community to do it!  Books are friends - come make a new friend!"

KENS 5 spoke to the store's owners two years ago, when the store turned to social media to announce plans to close. The response was overwhelming then, and Dead Tree Books was able to pay an overdue rent and remain open.

"There should be a resource here for the south side. Literacy is so important that kids know how to read," said Melissa Johnson, one of Dead Tree Books' owners, in 2019. "There are bookstores on the north side of the city, but this is basically it for this side of town."
