SAN ANTONIO -- Texas Christian University quarterback Trevone Boykin was arrested early Thursday morning after police said he was involved in a fight with an officer outside a downtown San Antonio bar.
Boykin was charged with felony assault on a public servant and held on $5,000 bond, according to Bexar County Central Magistrate records.
TCU head football coach Gary Patterson issued a statement saying Boykin has been suspended for Saturday's Alamo Bowl game due to a violation of team rules.
The statement also said TCU wide receiver Preston Miller has been suspended from Saturday's game, but more information about Miller's possible connection to this incident was not immediately available.
The San Antonio Police Department said officers were out on Losoya Street just before 2 a.m. when they said employees from Pat O'Briens waved them over because of a man inside who was reportedly causing problems.
They would later find out from several bystanders that the man in question was TCU's starting quarterback.
Police said he was fighting with the employees as he moved outside, and the group he was with was attempting to contain him.
Officers said they then spotted him swinging at other officers who came to assist. The officer involved was a part of a bike patrol, and SAPD said he suffered cuts on his knees.
According to the police report, Boykin was swinging at an officer before other officers took him to the ground. The altercation reportedly continued until an officer told Boykin that he would use a Taser on him if he did not comply.
The TCU Horned Frogs are set to play the University of Oregon Ducks in the Alamo Bowl on Saturday.
TCU offensive co-coordinators Sonny Cumbie and Doug Meacham declined to discuss Boykin's arrest during an afternoon news conference, saying the team was not yet prepared to name a new starter from among its backup quarterbacks.
Tailback Aaron Green said he knew people might count out the Horned Frogs after the loss of the team's leader, but he had different plans.
"We play our best games when our backs are against the wall," Green said. "I love people counting us out. That's when I play my best ball personally."
Boykin released a statement via Twitter on Thursday evening:
"Words can't describe how sorry I am. I truly let down my family, teammates and the TCU and Fort Worth communities who have supported me so much. I have no excuses for my very poor decision, and I'm embarrassed about it. My teammates and my brothers. There's nothing I wanted to do more than play one last game with my fellow seniors."
"Having my TCU degree means more to me than anything. I'm going to do my best to restore every Horned Frog's confidence in me. I love TCU and our football program. With Coach Patterson's leadership, our team is greater than any one individual. I have full confidence in my teammates when they take the field Saturday. I wish I could be there, but I won't because of my mistake that I have no one to blame but myself."
"I sincerely thank TCU for everything it has provided me, including an opportunity to earn my degree which I will always cherish. I will forever be a proud TCU Horned Frog, and I apologize to everyone again for my lapse in judgement. I hope others can learn from my mistake. I can assure you that I have because it took away the incredible honor and privilege it was to wear a TCU jersey. Thank you."
