SAN ANTONIO — UPDATE: Authorities identified the victim as 50-year-old Aadam Xirsi on Friday.
Windcrest police are hoping electronic clues will help catch a killer. Early Thursday, a cab driver was shot to death in a Texas Thrift store parking lot off I-35 and Eisenhauer shortly before 7 a.m.
Police believe technology in the vehicle may help crack the case.
Those who know the victim say his American dream ended with a bullet. A supervisor at Yellow Cab says the driver was an African immigrant who left family behind to build a better life here.
Windcrest Police Chief Al Ballew said detectives are working diligently to catch the killer.
"We want to make sure that we are able to take any leads immediately that we have," Ballew said.
The Yellow Cab President would not talk on camera, but off-camera, he said the company immediately gave police all the onboard data from the cab, which could include images of any passengers and GPS records. John Bouloubasis said a reward fund is in the works.
The victim's colleagues say they know they too could be driving into danger with every fare.
Adrian Gonzalez came to the scene to pay his respects. He said he has been driving a taxicab for about 15 years and he knows the dangers of the job well.
"I used to be a soldier in the Army, and I actually felt safer being a soldier than I did, you know, doing this," Gonzales said.
Gonzalez says drivers are a tight-knit group and he believes people will respond with grace. "I hope that we as a community can come together and pray for his family. And they're going to need help."
Windcrest Police said since the homicide happened in a very public parking lot as dawn was breaking, they are very interested in speaking with anyone who may have heard or seen anything that would help catch the killer.
