SAN ANTONIO -- Jill Goolsby thought it was a scam at first when she got a letter in the mail saying she had unclaimed money. She doubled checked on this website: ClaimitTexas.org and verified it was true. She tells KENS 5 that the extra $1100 couldn't have come at a better time.

As a working mom of four, Jill says getting money back from the state was simple. Through ClaimItTexas.org, she filled out a form with her personal information, and a few weeks later she got her check in the mail.

"I have no idea how that didn't make a way back to us the first time," Jill said.

The state says that the average claim is $1000.

The most common unclaimed property is bank accounts and payroll," said Diana Diaz of the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts office. "From a payroll you didn't know you had when you worked at a retail store... The money belongs to the owner forever. We don't have statute limitations."

For the Goolsby's, this extra cash will go toward a payment for a family vacation. And it also means a little less worries for the month.

"We get to enjoy our family," Jill said. "Just all these expenses that come up. It's nice to have some padding there. It was a win all the way around."

To see if you have any missing money, just go to ClaimitTexas.org, type in your name and any unclaimed property will pop up. The list is updated daily.
