Legendary SA boxer selected as name for new pavilion in District 5

The proposal came after Councilmember Teri Castillo said she heard from constituents that there was a hunger to honor Quiroga’s legacy.

SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Parks and Recreations Department and the District 5 Office held a public meeting to discuss the naming of Pavilion 2. The name selected honors the legacy of one of San Antonio's legendary boxers Robert "Pikin" Quiroga.

Quiroga is a beloved figure in District 5 as he graduated from Memorial High School and was the first World Super Flyweight Champion from the United States. He'd go on to defend the IBF Jr. Bantamweight Championship five times from 1990 to 1993.

The proposal came after Councilmember Teri Castillo said she heard from constituents that there was a hunger to honor Quiroga’s legacy.

“San Antonio’s Westside, especially District 5 has a rich tradition of boxers at all levels of competition,” Castillo said. “The proposed name for the pavilion at Rosedale Park, once approved, will serve to commemorate that spirit along with cherishing the legacy of Robert Quiroga.”

The next step is to take the decision before the entire San Antonio City Council for final approval.
