WATCH: SA choir treats La Cantera shoppers to surprise rendition of 'Ode to Joy'

The San Antonio Mastersingers were teasing their winter performances as well as this week's Big Give fundraising effort.

SAN ANTONIO — It isn't quite feeling like Christmas weather in San Antonio this month, but shoppers at La Cantera were nonetheless treated to cozy yuletide conditions when a choir broke out in a rendition of "Ode to Joy."

The San Antonio Mastersingers, which calls itself the state's first symphonic choir, surprised La Cantera patrons with the performance Tuesday evening. The singers, donning regular clothes and huge lungs, belted out Beethoven's notes for the impromptu show and later invited onlookers to take part in singing "Happy Birthday" for the shopper center, which is celebrating 19 years.

The Mastersingers will also take part in Wednesday's Big Give initiative, the largest day of online giving for South Texas nonprofits.
