Local nonprofit calls on community to help keep pantry stocked as demand for food skyrockets

CEO of Eagle's Flight Advocacy and Outreach, Pam Allen said, the need has been so high, that the organization has run out of money.

SAN ANTONIO — A quarter million people live at or below the poverty line in San Antonio and in the past two months, Eagle's Flight Advocacy and Outreach has seen nearly twenty thousand hungry people needing food.

At Dwight Middle School on the southside, Pamela Allen, CEO of Eagle's Flight tries to keep Kym's Kupboard stocked of food for whoever may need it.

Allen explains this summer, the demand has been so high that food has run out days after being restocked.

"We understand what's happening with the economy until we come out of that other side," Allen said. "This is what we're looking at for the next few months, and now we have Thanksgiving and Christmas coming up."

When shelves and fridges need to be restocked, Allen has relied on donations and community partners, like Hill Country Bread and Trader Joe's who assist the best they can.

"We go pick up from them [Trader Joe's] five times out of the week and come and replenish, she said. "When we have run out, that's when we have to run to the store and purchase what we can."

Allen said, the need has been so high, that the organization has run out of money. She has had to pay for food herself, so families wouldn't have to go home empty-handed.

"Recently we had to halt all of our counseling services  and hoping that we can reopen that and relook at that," she said. "What we're asking for on funding is to be able to to continue to purchase food  when our  pantries do go bare. And that happens very often."
