Memorial Stadium could soon see $141,000 in security improvements. Here's what has to happen first.

Whether you’re visiting or consider Memorial Stadium home, Harlandale ISD wants athletes and fans not to worry for their safety.

SAN ANTONIO — Harlandale ISD wants to make sure families and visitors at Memorial Stadium have peace of mind when watching games.

That peace of mind comes with a price tag: $141,013. Trustees will discuss and potentially vote on that cost Wednesday afternoon.

Juan Hinojosa, executive director of operations for the district, says security should be a top priority for every organization this day and age.

“The fans, the parents, all of our visitors—they feel safe and secure while they’re here,” he said.

Before making the request for security enhancements at Memorial Stadium, Hinojosa said he felt the venue isn't up to par with other campuses.

“Our stadium was very old," he said. "It was in need of renovation, so the previous press box and the small locker room that we had didn’t have any security. It wasn’t integrated into our system at all.”

The same technology used on campuses will be implemented into the stadium if approved by the school board.

“We want to make sure we don’t spare any expense," Hinojosa said. “The locker room space, the cameras are for exterior cameras only, so it’s really just the entrances as you walk in.”

Whether you’re visiting or you consider Memorial Stadium home, Hinojosa wants athletes and fans to not be wary of safety, but rather keeping their head in the game.

“At the end of the day we just want to make sure the students here at Harlandale have the same opportunities as any of the students throughout the city."

Hinojosa is anticipating that, should the request be approved, the new and improved security equipment will be installed by mid-spring, toward the end of the track and field season.
