At the Briscoe, San Antonians create their own piñatas and learn about their religious origins

A San Antonio artist helped guests create a colorful piñata of their very own.

SAN ANTONIO — Guests from all around San Antonio came together to create a piñata of their very own Sunday afternoon at the Briscoe Western Art Museum.

Local artist Adriana Gamez led the group, instructing them on how to assemble and decorate a cheerful, candy-filled masterpiece.

Gamez also dove into the origins of the traditional celebratory craft, explaining they date to several hundred years ago. According to the Catholic doctrine, each point on the piñata represents one of the seven deadly sins: pride, greed, wrath, envy, lust, gluttony and sloth.

The fruit and candy stuffed inside the piñata is used to symbolize the temptations of evil, but it's since lost its religious significance and is now commonly used in many types of celebrations.

The Briscoe Western Art Museum is planning on hosting several seasonal events and workshops throughout the year.

The next workshop is the Watercolor Workshop featuring Teal Blake, an award-winning artist and member of Cowboy Artists of America. Blake plans to instruct guests on how to create an animal form with watercolor paint.
