SAN ANTONIO — In between planning Holy Week festivities, Father Tony Vilano is dealing with the headaches of yet another act of vandalism at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.
For the second time in two weeks, someone chucked a rock through one of the church’s windows. No arrests have been made.
“We have no idea what’s going on," Vilano said. "It’s aggravating. It just messes up the rhythm of things, especially during Holy Week.”
It was Tuesday morning when church staff discovered a rock had smashed through the window of a room where priests gather before mass.
Pictures posted to the church’s Facebook page show a massive hole in the window and glass shattered on a table. Vilano showed KENS 5 the trash bin where the rock and shards of glass remain.
The previous act of vandalism occurred March 12. That’s when a rock shattered a portion of the front entrance window where parishioners often gather, the priest said.
Vilano is now working with faith leadership and fellow parishioners on a plan to upgrade surveillance.
“We have cameras inside the church and inside the buildings and everything else, but now we’re going to have to put surveillance cameras all over the campus just to figure out what’s going on," he said. "Hopefully nothing like this will happen again.”
The church filed police reports and has consulted with the Archdiocese of San Antonio on how to move forward.
Vilano, meanwhile, is calling on whoever is responsible to own up to the vandalism.
“Just stop doing it," he said. "Just have respect for not only this church, but for all different churches and peoples' home and property. Know they’re in our prayers. That’s all I can really do is pray for the individual.”
