Volunteers help keep homeless San Antonians dry during frigid conditions

The grassroots group called Stella SA is collecting wet blankets and clothes from unhoused individuals. Volunteers wash, dry and return items the next day.

SAN ANTONIO — The first cold snap of the season has arrived. The drastic dip in temperatures, coupled with the rain, can be dangerous for those living outside in San Antonio.

Damp fabric severely increases the risk of hypothermia. On Monday, Sarah Sullivan handed out new clothing and blankets to people experiencing homelessness downtown. The founder of Stella SA not only gave to those in need, but she took some personal items with her.

“I am going to take all the stuff that got wet,” she told a crowd gathered by her car. “I am going to wash and dry them, then bring them back.”

Sullivan started the volunteer outreach program during the pandemic to help address the city’s growing needs.

“Each season it’s building the trust to let us get them warm things, trust us with their things," Sullivan said.

She urges everyone to get involved in their neighborhood.

“Go out in your own community and shake people’s hands and ask them what they need,” said Sullivan. “Because every community in San Antonio, every house in San Antonio, needs different things.”
